Primary

A learning environment where students flourish and grow.

Curriculum

At Lumio Private School, we offer a bespoke international curriculum for Grades 1–5, underpinned by our accreditation as a Cambridge International School to provide a strong academic foundation for every child.

Our approach is enriched through a wide range of engaging Project-Based Learning (PBL) topics that spark curiosity and deepen understanding.  These projects are thoughtfully designed to show clear progression across subjects and year groups. We emphasise interdisciplinary learning, helping children make meaningful links across disciplines. Our curriculum nurtures critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration—skills essential for future learning. This dynamic approach prepares students for success in the Middle Years International Baccalaureate programme in Grade 6.

Core Curriculum

English

Our English programme focuses on literacy, critical thinking, and communication, emphasising expressive and receptive language skills across all subjects. Literacy skills are deepened and brought to life through our Project-Based learning making English purposeful and engaging.

Mathematics

Our Mathematics programme builds deep conceptual understanding and strong problem-solving skills. Our curriculum emphasizes logical reasoning, mental strategies, and visual models. We follow the CPA (Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract) progression to ensure learners grasp mathematical ideas meaningfully.

Project-Based Learning (PBL)

Our Project-Based Learning (PBL) brings the wider curriculum to life through meaningful, hands-on experiences. Each project is designed to integrate subjects which include Science, Humanities, Computing, Design Technology, Art & Design, Music, Physical Development, and Modern Foreign Languages, making purposeful links across learning areas.

PBL Subjects

Science

The Science curriculum develops learners’ curiosity and understanding of the world through the key disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, supported by Scientific Enquiry. It encourages children to ask questions, explore ideas, and carry out investigations to deepen their knowledge of living things, materials, forces, and energy. Through practical, hands-on learning, learners develop essential skills in observation, prediction, and analysis, while gaining an appreciation of how science is used to explain and shape the world around them.

Humanities

Our Humanities curriculum develops learners’ understanding of the world through three interwoven strands: Places, People, and the Past. It enables children to explore how physical and human environments shape lives, how individuals and communities interact within and across societies, and how historical events and developments influence the present day. Through enquiry, discussion, and the use of a range of sources, learners build critical thinking skills, develop a sense of identity and belonging, and gain an appreciation of cultural diversity and global interconnectedness.

Computing

The Computing curriculum develops learners’ understanding of how digital systems work and how to use them effectively and responsibly. Through strands such as Computational Thinking, Programming, Managing Data, Networks, and Digital Literacy, students learn to solve problems, create simple programs, and understand how technology shapes the world around them. The curriculum encourages logical thinking, creativity, and responsible digital citizenship.

Music

The Music curriculum develops learners’ understanding and appreciation of music through the interconnected strands of Listening, Performing, and Composing. It encourages children to explore a wide range of musical styles and traditions, develop their vocal and instrumental skills, and express their ideas creatively. Through active engagement, learners build confidence, musical awareness, and an understanding of how music reflects culture, history, and emotion.

Physical Education

The Physical Education curriculum develops learners’ physical competence, confidence, and enjoyment of movement through a broad range of activities. It encourages children to develop fundamental movement skills, teamwork, and strategic thinking through participation in games, athletics, and physical challenges. The curriculum promotes healthy, active lifestyles while fostering resilience, cooperation, and an understanding of the importance of physical wellbeing.

STEAM Integration

The STEAM curriculum integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics to develop learners’ creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. It encourages children to make connections across disciplines, apply their knowledge to real-world challenges, and engage in hands-on, collaborative learning. Through inquiry, design, and innovation, learners are supported to think imaginatively, experiment with ideas, and understand how different fields work together to shape the world around them.

Greek & History of Cyprus

We place a strong emphasis on learning the Greek language and developing an understanding of the rich history of Cyprus. This supports learners in building a meaningful connection to their heritage, while also deepening their awareness of the island’s cultural identity. Through this focus, students broaden their historical and cultural perspective and gain a greater appreciation of Cyprus within a wider global context.

English as a Secondary Language Support

All teachers in the primary school integrate ESL support into their classroom practice, with a strong focus on developing vocabulary, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and both written and spoken language skills.
Our structured ESL support provides targeted support for students in Grades 4 and 5 through a clear cycle of assessment and intervention. All learners begin with a baseline assessment, with additional diagnostic testing for those identified in the early stages of English acquisition. Based on language proficiency rather than age, selected students are placed in an ESL SPaG and targeted English support groups, where they receive focused instruction from an ESL teacher.
These SPaG and additional English support lessons emphasise classroom and survival English, subject-specific vocabulary, and the development of fluency and accuracy in spelling, punctuation, and grammar. This targeted support enables students to access the curriculum more confidently and succeed in their Project Based Learning. Daily precision teaching further accelerates progress through short, focused sessions that target high-frequency vocabulary and key phonics patterns.
Student progress is closely monitored through ongoing weekly assessments. Mixed-age groupings within the ESL setting promote collaboration, communication, and accelerated language development by grouping learners according to their language needs.

Overall use of Technology

Technology at Lumio is used thoughtfully to enhance learning. In Grades 1–3, students use iPads at designated times to support core skills through guided activities on Toddle and educational apps. In Grades 4–5, students also use Chromebooks to develop research skills and digital literacy, while learning about online safety and responsible use. All use is carefully monitored to ensure a safe and purposeful experience.

Homework

Homework plays an important role in consolidating and extending children’s learning. Homework supports the partnership between home and school, encourages positive learning habits.

Expectations

Reading

All children are expected to read for at least 10 minutes every night.

This can include reading aloud to an adult, silent reading, or shared reading experiences.

Parents are encouraged to discuss the text with their child to support comprehension and vocabulary development.

Spelling and Times Tables

Each week, children will learn 10 spellings and a times table focus.

These will be practised at home and tested every Friday.

This builds accuracy, fluency, and confidence in key literacy and numeracy skills.

Project-Based Learning (PBL)

Each half term, children will take part in a Project-Based Learning project linked to their class theme.

Projects are designed to give children ownership and choice in their learning.

Activities may include research, creating models, art, writing, presentations, or other creative outputs related to the topic.

Projects should be completed over time and shared with the class to celebrate learning.

Assessments

Teachers use two types of assessment:

Type What It Means Examples
Formative Assessment Ongoing check-ins to help students improve Observations, quizzes, discussions, self-assessments
Summative Assessment End-of-topic checks to see what has been learned Tests, presentations, projects

Assessments Throughout the Year

Reporting Progress to Parents

At Lumio, we use a 1–7 grading scale for both effort and attainment. This system is used in all grades to show how well your child is doing.

You will receive:

  • Two Interim Reports – in October and February: These tell you if your child is on track. If not, we will invite you and your child to a meeting to plan support.
  • Two Full Report Cards – in December and June: These include grades for effort and attainment, teacher feedback, a statement showing if your child is on track, and three targets to help them improve.

If your child is not making the expected progress and is below attainment grade 3, parents will be invited to discuss appropriate support strategies and next steps. If expected progress is not attained by February of the academic year, you may be asked to have your child repeat the grade.
