I am honoured to be part of Lumio Private School, a school whose founding vision—as a child-centred, not-for-profit learning community—resonates deeply with my personal and professional ethos. After more than twenty years working across international contexts in Italy, the UK, and Spain, I am excited to contribute to a school that places students’ wellbeing, curiosity, and growth at the heart of its mission.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with the International Baccalaureate in a variety of roles, as IBEN educator, experiences that have deepened my commitment to holistic and inclusive education.

The opportunity to shape a school like Lumio, one that sees education as both a personal and societal force for good, is both inspiring and timely. I am especially drawn to Lumio’s vision of learning as a transformative and humanizing journey—one that not only cultivates knowledge, but also builds empathy, resilience, and a strong sense of community. This role represents more than a professional milestone; it reflects a long-standing belief that schools must be places of purpose, creativity, and care. I look forward to continue working closely with students, staff, and families to build a shared culture of trust, high expectations, and joy in learning.

Having grown up in Tanzania in a multicultural environment, I’m happy to be able to once again return to that environment and being surrounded by such diversity.  I’m happy to be joining the Lumio family and helping our students succeed in not only their education but their life and wellbeing.

When I was in school, I struggled with writing on the blackboard. I never managed to do it well, and my doodles were always terrible. As a result, I thought that “being a teacher was definitely not for me.”

Over time, I realised that writing on the board was not the most important thing, and that even this skill could be learned. Becoming part of a team to create an International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme with the inclusion of Russian mathematics education practices was a challenge and an opportunity for me.

I find joy in the simple pleasures of life. When I am not in the classroom, you will often find me lost in a good book, playing the piano, or soaking up the sun with my family on the beaches of Paphos. My family means the world to me, and I truly cherish time spent with loved ones — including our dogs, bearded dragon, and hamster!

I approach everything I do with enthusiasm, whether I am at work, learning new skills, embracing adventure, or collaborating with others. I love to travel, meet new people, and explore fresh ideas. Warmth, positivity, and a genuine desire to make the most of every moment guide how I live my life — along with a commitment to making a positive impact on those around me.

What truly drives me is teaching and learning, and ensuring that every student has a personalised, meaningful journey. I believe education should never be one-size-fits-all, and that each learner deserves a unique experience. • 10 years of experience as an IB DP teacher, head of department and head of secondary school in various international schools.
  • Research and development chemist in a pharmaceutical company.

While working on my PhD at the University of Manchester, I was initially offered the chance to teach a support class for first-year undergraduates as a way to earn some extra money, which I needed at the time. To my surprise, I discovered not only that I enjoyed teaching, but also that I had a knack for it. By the end of my first year, I was teaching an after school support class for my supervisor, employed as a teaching assistant for second-year organic chemistry labs, and volunteering with the School of Chemistry’s outreach programme. These experiences eventually led me to become involved with the Salters’ Institute and Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) as a ‘Science Ambassador.’ In this role, during the last two years of my PhD, I visited several K-12 schools across Greater Manchester, promoting STEM education through exciting flash-bang demonstrations, hands-on activities, and interactive discussions with students of all ages. Looking back, teaching was always in my path—it just took some time for me to fully embrace it.

I spent 16 years living in the desert, I absolutely love hiking, cycling, and exploring new places! Despite my desert adventure, I’ve hiked the stunning Dolomites in Italy, tackled mountains in Slovenia and Romania, and even rafted through the Soca Valley. And yes, I’ve jumped into freezing mountain lakes—totally worth it!

Teaching has always been my passion, and I’m here because I believe in the power of education to make a real difference. I’m especially inspired by the name “Lumio,” which means “light” — a perfect reminder of what I hope to bring into the classroom. In families of teachers, the profession is often passed down, as in a poem by Agniya Barto:
Petya was born in a teacher’s family.
They decided to raise Petya strictly.
In the evening, Petya came into the world,
By morning, a family council was called.
My grandmother and mother are both teachers, but my journey into education was unexpected. The decision to become a teacher found me accidentally during my third year at university.

And here’s a fun fact about me: I spent four years doing ballroom dancing!

I have spent the last eight years teaching in international classrooms, and what continues to inspire me is the IB approach: students learn best when they inquire, connect ideas and think for themselves rather than simply memorising facts. I especially enjoy seeing a student move from struggling to structure an argument, to presenting and defending it with confidence.

Outside the classroom, I am usually reading or planning my next trip. I enjoy travelling, spending time outdoors, playing table tennis and taking long walks. I am always keen to discover a new city, a new trail or a new author.

I am deeply drawn to spaces where learning unfolds naturally through curiosity, reflection, and meaningful dialogue. Beyond the classroom, I often find myself immersed in cinema, reading, or exploring the ways storytelling and visual culture shape how we understand the world. These interests are closely connected to my academic pursuits, as I am particularly interested in how education can become a living, evolving process rather than a fixed outcome.

What motivates me most is approaching both teaching and learning as collaborative paths. From my perspective, education is a shared journey rather than a fixed outcome — one in which students and educators grow together through inquiry, confidence and authentic engagement with knowledge. This philosophy is what excites me about being part of Lumio, a school that places these values at the heart of its educational vision.

Education is my passion; I could speak about it endlessly. I believe that education brings light and hope to the world. Through foreign language lessons, we don’t just learn vocabulary and grammar — we discover other cultures, become more tolerant and open-minded, and learn to think critically and see things from different perspectives.

I love working with children and teenagers because I value their clear and unfiltered thinking, unique sense of humour, and openness to new ideas. Teenagers are sincere and quick to spot insincerity, just like me. Perhaps that’s why we connect so naturally.

For as long as I can remember, I have had a deep and natural need to read. Books have always shaped how I understand the world and fueled my curiosity. In my spare time, I enjoy staying active outdoors, whether hiking Cyprus’s scenic trails or swimming at sunset, but my main passion is still getting lost in a good book.

I enjoy exploring different cultures and having thoughtful conversations, and I am fascinated by the way stories can connect us regardless of where we come from. That same love of exploration is why I am passionate about teaching language and literature: words can be both a mirror through which learners understand themselves and a window into the wider world.

  • Mathematics Teacher and Head of Mathematics Department, “Invention Classes” – CPM School / School #179, Moscow, Russia.

The connections within mathematics, and between mathematics and other fields such as art, have always fascinated me. It is especially rewarding to see students discover that same beauty and to share their enjoyment as ideas begin to connect.

Outside work, I usually take part in tabletop and live-action role-play games. I tend to participate as a player rather than a game master, although I have led several games for adolescent players. I value the way role-play can help us explore how another person might think and experience the world.

Born and raised in Spain, I love being back in a warm climate, spending time outdoors in nature and saying hello to every cat I see!

The international curriculum strongly resonates with me because an inclusive environment gives students space to express themselves and develop a growth mindset around their interests, especially through creative pursuits. I believe encouraging young people to think outside the box while staying organised helps them achieve their full potential.

  • Librarian/Humanities Teacher, Dalton Academy, Affiliated H.S. of Peking University, China, 4 years.

During the first half of my professional life, I engaged in humanitarian and developmental assistance in post-conflict regions. This experience ultimately brought me into the sphere of education as a platform for building confidence and peace between various groups of youth. Then, thanks to inspiration from my daughter’s Tbilisi-based IB World school, I shifted my focus to education and librarianship. What followed were life changing experiences at IB schools in China and Poland and a Harkness school in Tbilisi. To this day I have a passion for the crucial role librarians and libraries play in building global awareness and understanding, while simultaneously strengthening literacy skills and fostering a love of reading.

When not in school, I enjoy singing and swimming (not simultaneously), reading (naturally), learning languages, and gardening. While living in Beijing and Wroclaw, I got around everywhere on a bicycle. One of my goals in Paphos is to return to the thrill of two wheeled locomotion.

At the centre of my professional worldview is a human being. The subjectivity of each participant in the educational process is important to me, it doesn’t matter if you are a child or an adult. In my work, I rely on the well-established processes and, at the same time, I believe in the power of experimentation and creativity. I believe that it is important not to be afraid to try new things, to go beyond the templates, be critical of even the most authoritative opinions, comprehend the experience gained and try again. I dream that high-quality educational experience will be available to all people in the world.

First and foremost, I’m obviously at Lumio because of the red cat and Blueberry the black cat, who sit at the office entrance. Every time I try to leave for home, they give me this intense stare, as if silently questioning whether I’ve done everything possible today to make Lumio even better.

It’s not just their watchful eyes—my own inner drive to create something truly good in this world pushes me forward. It’s also important that I clearly feel my vision for a school resonating with that of my colleagues—a school that’s a caring, supportive home where everyone is loved and valued, where guests are welcome, and where you always want to return. And let’s be honest, with those two on the lookout, Lumio is in the best possible hands—or rather, paws.
