I am honoured to be part of Lumio Private School, a school whose founding vision—as a child-centred, not-for-profit learning community—resonates deeply with my personal and professional ethos. After more than twenty years working across international contexts in Italy, the UK, and Spain, I am excited to contribute to a school that places students’ wellbeing, curiosity, and growth at the heart of its mission.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with the International Baccalaureate in a variety of roles, as IBEN educator, experiences that have deepened my commitment to holistic and inclusive education.

The opportunity to shape a school like Lumio, one that sees education as both a personal and societal force for good, is both inspiring and timely. I am especially drawn to Lumio’s vision of learning as a transformative and humanizing journey—one that not only cultivates knowledge, but also builds empathy, resilience, and a strong sense of community. This role represents more than a professional milestone; it reflects a long-standing belief that schools must be places of purpose, creativity, and care. I look forward to working closely with students, staff, and families to build a shared culture of trust, high expectations, and joy in learning.

I find joy in the simple pleasures of life. When I am not in the classroom, you will often find me lost in a good book, playing the piano, or soaking up the sun with my family on the beaches of Paphos. My family means the world to me, and I truly cherish time spent with loved ones — including our dogs, bearded dragon, and hamster!

I approach everything I do with enthusiasm, whether I am at work, learning new skills, embracing adventure, or collaborating with others. I love to travel, meet new people, and explore fresh ideas. Warmth, positivity, and a genuine desire to make the most of every moment guide how I live my life — along with a commitment to making a positive impact on those around me.

What truly drives me is teaching and learning, and ensuring that every student has a personalised, meaningful journey. I believe education should never be one-size-fits-all, and that each learner deserves a unique experience. This is exactly why I am excited to be part of Lumio — a place that fosters creativity, individuality, and student-centred learning.

I spent 16 years living in the desert, I absolutely love hiking, cycling, and exploring new places! Despite my desert adventure, I’ve hiked the stunning Dolomites in Italy, tackled mountains in Slovenia and Romania, and even rafted through the Soca Valley. And yes, I’ve jumped into freezing mountain lakes—totally worth it!

Teaching has always been my passion, and I’m here because I believe in the power of education to make a real difference. While working on my PhD at the University of Manchester, I was initially offered the chance to teach a support class for first-year undergraduates as a way to earn some extra money, which I needed at the time. To my surprise, I discovered not only that I enjoyed teaching, but also that I had a knack for it. By the end of my first year, I was teaching an after school support class for my supervisor, employed as a teaching assistant for second-year organic chemistry labs, and volunteering with the School of Chemistry’s outreach programme. These experiences eventually led me to become involved with the Salters’ Institute and Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) as a ‘Science Ambassador.’ In this role, during the last two years of my PhD, I visited several K-12 schools across Greater Manchester, promoting STEM education through exciting flash-bang demonstrations, hands-on activities, and interactive discussions with students of all ages. Looking back, teaching was always in my path—it just took some time for me to fully embrace it.

In families of teachers, the profession is often passed down, as in a poem by Agniya Barto:
Petya was born in a teacher’s family.
They decided to raise Petya strictly.
In the evening, Petya came into the world,
By morning, a family council was called.
My grandmother and mother are both teachers, but my journey into education was unexpected. The decision to become a teacher found me accidentally during my third year at university.

And here’s a fun fact about me: I spent four years doing ballroom dancing!

I have lived in different countries and taught children of various cultures in multiple languages. In my understanding, a good teacher is not merely someone who fills a child’s head with knowledge to pass the next test, but rather a person capable of demonstrating a way of thinking, showing how to be a worthy and reasonable human being, and most importantly—motivating students to be curious about the world around them.

I have developed a recommendation/formula for people of any culture and temperament: if you want your body to serve you longer—do sports; if you want your brain to work longer—engage in science or learn languages; if you want your personality to thrive—make art or sing.

Through foreign language lessons, we don’t just learn vocabulary and grammar — we discover other cultures, become more tolerant and open-minded, and learn to think critically and see things from different perspectives.

I love working with children and teenagers because I value their clear and unfiltered thinking, unique sense of humour, and openness to new ideas. Teenagers are sincere and quick to spot insincerity, just like me. Perhaps that’s why we connect so naturally.

I have a fear of heights but have jumped from an airplane, parachuting and off of a mountain cliff while paragliding. It has not changed that fear! However, I learned I can land on my feet… sort of.

I believe that every child has a talent and needs a safe, creative environment to explore in and grow. I also believe that empathy and critical thinking are the pillars of a healthy society and should be developed in school.  I believe that Lumio offers all of that.

When I’m not teaching or planning fun, active lessons, you’ll likely find me on a hiking trail or in the kitchen trying out new recipes. Everyone knows I can’t help but talk about food—it’s almost as big a passion of mine as teaching! Oh, and I might have a knack for axe throwing, too—I even earned a certificate for it at our last team-building event.
With a deep passion for creating a fun and energetic atmosphere where kids love to participate, my goal is to make every lesson a highlight of their day, filled with laughter, movement, and a sense of achievement. My life as an expat began shortly after university and has taken me through 16 years in South Korea and the past seven in Kazakhstan. These two countries have shaped the way I teach, connect, and adapt.

To me, great teaching starts with curiosity, empathy, and flexibility — and a sense of humour never hurts. My classroom is a blend of structure and heart: a place where mistakes are part of the process, effort matters more than perfection, and growth is celebrated — usually with a few laughs (and the occasional tear, too). It’s not just about teaching content; it’s about building skills, confidence, and a genuine love for learning.

When I’m not lesson planning or troubleshooting tech with ten-year-olds, you’ll likely find me exploring new places, trying local dishes, or enjoying a quiet evening with my husband..

  • Librarian/Humanities Teacher, Dalton Academy, Affiliated H.S. of Peking University, China, 4 years.

During the first half of my professional life, I engaged in humanitarian and developmental assistance in post-conflict regions. This experience ultimately brought me into the sphere of education as a platform for building confidence and peace between various groups of youth. Then, thanks to inspiration from my daughter’s Tbilisi-based IB World school, I shifted my focus to education and librarianship. What followed were life changing experiences at IB schools in China and Poland and a Harkness school in Tbilisi. To this day I have a passion for the crucial role librarians and libraries play in building global awareness and understanding, while simultaneously strengthening literacy skills and fostering a love of reading.

When not in school, I enjoy singing and swimming (not simultaneously), reading (naturally), learning languages, and gardening. While living in Beijing and Wroclaw, I got around everywhere on a bicycle. One of my goals in Paphos is to return to the thrill of two wheeled locomotion.

As for why I love working in schools, it’s because every day is an adventure filled with fun and excitement. More than anything in the world, I love children and animals, which is why there is always someone running, meowing, and barking in our house.

I truly believe that being a good and compassionate adult means reconnecting with real emotions. One of the best ways to do this is by being around children and animals. Free from filters and prejudices, they play, form relationships, argue, laugh, and cry. Our role is to observe, learn, and guide them when necessary. There is no better place than school to learn wisdom from each other. Lumio is the perfect place for children and adults from different cultures and countries to learn how to accept and love each other.

When I was in school, I struggled with writing on the blackboard. I never managed to do it well, and my doodles were always terrible. As a result, I thought that “being a teacher was definitely not for me.”

Over time, I realised that writing on the board was not the most important thing, and that even this skill could be learned. Becoming part of a team to create an International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme with the inclusion of Russian mathematics education practices was a challenge and an opportunity for me.

My big passion in life is swing dancing, so if you see me on the dance floor, don’t hesitate to invite me to
dance!

At the centre of my professional worldview is a human being. The subjectivity of each participant in the educational process is important to me, it doesn’t matter if you are a child or an adult. In my work, I rely on the well-established processes and, at the same time, I believe in the power of experimentation and creativity. I believe that it is important not to be afraid to try new things, to go beyond the templates, be critical of even the most authoritative opinions, comprehend the experience gained and try again. I dream that high-quality educational experience will be available to all people in the world.

First and foremost, I’m obviously at Lumio because of the red cat and Blueberry the black cat, who sit at the office entrance. Every time I try to leave for home, they give me this intense stare, as if silently questioning whether I’ve done everything possible today to make Lumio even better.

It’s not just their watchful eyes—my own inner drive to create something truly good in this world pushes me forward. It’s also important that I clearly feel my vision for a school resonating with that of my colleagues—a school that’s a caring, supportive home where everyone is loved and valued, where guests are welcome, and where you always want to return. And let’s be honest, with those two on the lookout, Lumio is in the best possible hands—or rather, paws.
