I spent 16 years living in the desert, I absolutely love hiking, cycling, and exploring new places! Despite my desert adventure, I’ve hiked the stunning Dolomites in Italy, tackled mountains in Slovenia and Romania, and even rafted through the Soca Valley. And yes, I’ve jumped into freezing mountain lakes—totally worth it!

Teaching has always been my passion, and I’m here because I believe in the power of education to make a real difference. I’m especially inspired by the name “Lumio,” which means “light” — a perfect reminder of what I hope to bring into the classroom. My goal is to help every child shine and become the best version of themselves, both academically and personally.

Andreas Economou

  • 10 years of experience as an IB DP teacher, head of department and head of secondary school in various international schools.

While working on my PhD at the University of Manchester, I was initially offered the chance to teach a support class for first-year undergraduates as a way to earn some extra money, which I needed at the time. To my surprise, I discovered not only that I enjoyed teaching, but also that I had a knack for it. By the end of my first year, I was teaching an after school support class for my supervisor, employed as a teaching assistant for second-year organic chemistry labs, and volunteering with the School of Chemistry’s outreach programme. These experiences eventually led me to become involved with the Salters’ Institute and Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) as a ‘Science Ambassador.’ In this role, during the last two years of my PhD, I visited several K-12 schools across Greater Manchester, promoting STEM education through exciting flash-bang demonstrations, hands-on activities, and interactive discussions with students of all ages. Looking back, teaching was always in my path—it just took some time for me to fully embrace it.

After qualifying as a fitness instructor in my younger years, I developed a keen interest in teaching and enjoyed being part of helping my clients achieve their goals. I was subsequently able to combine my love of geography, the outside world, and teaching by training as a teacher. Training while fasting can boost fat burning, and bodybuilding endurance makes hiking easier. Combining these passions makes me ready to conquer any trail!  Daily interactions with many different cultures, nationalities and languages is a very energising way to live your life.

For many years, we have been dreaming about living and working in a place which has both a lot of sun and a teaching environment that cherishes a holistic education and equally respects students and teachers. Until recently, we have had either one or the other, at best.  I believe my wife and I may have found such a place at Lumio School in sunny Paphos.

In families of teachers, the profession is often passed down, as in a poem by Agniya Barto:
Petya was born in a teacher’s family.
They decided to raise Petya strictly.
In the evening, Petya came into the world,
By morning, a family council was called.
My grandmother and mother are both teachers, but my journey into education was unexpected. The decision to become a teacher found me accidentally during my third year at university.

And here’s a fun fact about me: I spent four years doing ballroom dancing!

My main joy in teaching is to see students’ progress (even if it is done with small steps) and all these ‘insight’ moments when children realise how to solve a challenge.  Lumio School seems as the perfect place where these progressions and insights may happen.

When I’m not teaching or planning fun, active lessons, you’ll likely find me on a hiking trail or in the kitchen trying out new recipes. Everyone knows I can’t help but talk about food—it’s almost as big a passion of mine as teaching! Oh, and I might have a knack for axe throwing, too—I even earned a certificate for it at our last team-building event.

With a deep passion for creating a fun and energetic atmosphere where kids love to participate, my goal is to make every lesson a highlight of their day, filled with laughter, movement, and a sense of achievement. I believe that physical education isn’t just about sports, but about fostering a lifelong love for an active lifestyle. I am thrilled to be part of the inaugural teaching team at Lumio Private School in Paphos.  My values as a teacher align perfectly with those of Lumio which is why I am so excited to start this journey and to help create a wonderful school for our students and the community.  Due to my many years of teaching experience, it is important to me to work at a school that has the sole aim of providing the best conditions for all children to learn and thrive in and Lumio offers exactly that.

I took up skateboarding to keep up with my three-year-old daughter on her scooter. We now enjoy surf skating together.

My affinity for working in schools abroad stems from my personal background that includes growing up abroad and attending international schools. I am a proud third culture kid and have always been aware of how special that is. My parents were international educators, and they must have done something right as myself and my sisters have all been inspired to become passionate educators. I always feel honoured to be part of a child’s learning journey and I am looking forward to the learning adventures that the Lumio community has ahead of us.

Whilst training to become a teacher, I worked part-time as a Disney princess! I would attend children’s birthday parties and events, dressed as various Disney princesses, to dance, sing, and play games with the children. Perhaps these characters will have to make a comeback in the future…!

I have spent the last few years working with students from all over the world; being able to learn about and shared cultures is something wonderful. Lumio School is a diverse community of nationalities that I feel very proud to be a part of — we have the opportunity to learn from and about each other every day. When I was in school, I struggled with writing on the blackboard. I never managed to do it well, and my doodles were always terrible. As a result, I thought that “being a teacher was definitely not for me.”

Over time, I realised that writing on the board was not the most important thing, and that even this skill could be learned. Becoming part of a team to create an International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme with the inclusion of Russian mathematics education practices was a challenge and an opportunity for me.

dance!

At the centre of my professional worldview is a human being. The subjectivity of each participant in the educational process is important to me, it doesn’t matter if you are a child or an adult. In my work, I rely on the well-established processes and, at the same time, I believe in the power of experimentation and creativity. I believe that it is important not to be afraid to try new things, to go beyond the templates, be critical of even the most authoritative opinions, comprehend the experience gained and try again. I dream that high-quality educational experience will be available to all people in the world.

First and foremost, I’m obviously at Lumio because of the red cat and Blueberry the black cat, who sit at the office entrance. Every time I try to leave for home, they give me this intense stare, as if silently questioning whether I’ve done everything possible today to make Lumio even better.

It’s not just their watchful eyes—my own inner drive to create something truly good in this world pushes me forward. It’s also important that I clearly feel my vision for a school resonating with that of my colleagues—a school that’s a caring, supportive home where everyone is loved and valued, where guests are welcome, and where you always want to return. And let’s be honest, with those two on the lookout, Lumio is in the best possible hands—or rather, paws.

I haven’t seen most iconic movies like The Matrix, The Terminator, or Game of Thrones, making me the person who always gets asked, “How have you not watched this?!” I’m a huge Harry Potter fan and have read each book about 50 times!

I chose to work in education because I believe that children are the future, and shaping the next generation is a profound responsibility. There’s something magical about guiding children as they grow into wise, content, and prepared-for-life adults. Lumio’s values resonate deeply with my own, and I’m excited to contribute to creating a nurturing and supportive environment where “Happy children, learn together!” Honestly, being a teacher has been a dream of mine since childhood!

My daughter told the doctor that when she grows up, she wants to become a doctor, so if she becomes one that would be wonderful. I believe that a good education will help her to do this.

I decided to work at a school because I have always enjoyed helping others where I can and offering my services for the good of the community. Working in a private school is a challenge, but at the same time, it is a very good opportunity to develop both personally and professionally.

I was impressed by the beautiful nature of Canada. There are a lot of wild animals that come right up to the house. They are mostly deer, but one morning I saw a big bear near my house and it was in the centre of our small town. I will remember this for the rest of my life.

I was attracted to working at school because I really like working with children! I am pleased to take care of the children and give them support, they have pure hearts and souls. I give them my love when I treat their wounds.  It’s nice to see that they leave the medical room calmed down and with a smile
